Overseer Josephine Byrd founded Joy Tabernacle Church of God in Newark, NJ in 1953. Through the late seventies Joy Tabernacle was the center of revival in the city of Newark. The Church focused on saving the lost and serving the disadvantaged of Newark and its surrounding areas. In 1993, Rev. Emma Salter was installed as senior pastor of Joy Tabernacle and the church changed its name to Joy Tabernacle Christian Ministries. Under Rev. Salter’s leadership Joy Tabernacle grew signifcantly. With a strong heart for education, the ministry increased the grades of the primary and secondary level students within the community via its tutoring program and education initiatives; awarded scholarships to high school graduates to attend college; eliminated welfare from the congregation; and increased financial literacy among members to help those who were unemployed become gainfully employed, among many other achievements. Rev. Salter's leadership was marked by her relentless service to the Kingdom and her passionate messages of deliverance which changed the lives of many.
In September, 2006 the church welcomed the third generation of leadership by electing DeAndre M. Salter as its new pastor. Pastor D, as he likes to be called, succeeds his mother, Reverend Emma Salter, who has pastored the Ministry for thirteen years. Rev. Emma is proud to make the unprecedented move to transition the Ministry to her son while the church is still vital and growing. “I am extremely excited about this transitional period. Pastor De’Andre’s vision will be a blessing not only to this ministry but the entire body of Christ,” said Reverend Emma Salter. Pastor D will launch new community initiatives with the goal to reach more people in impoverished communities in New Jersey by building diverse partners across racial and socio-economic lines in order to help families prosper spiritually and socially, creating legacies for future generations. The church is now simply named The Tabernacle, which means the "the meeting place." It is not important that we have a place to meet, but what happens when two or three are gathered in His name. The Tabernacle is the place where you find your purpose, meet loving people, and learn how to live the abundant life promsied to all believers. We are here to spur the radical change that begins in your life when you serve Christ. Our vision needs you because our mission benefits you. This is why we proclaim that The Tabernacle is "Where Hope is Birthed and Dreams are Fulfilled." |
